This course is offered in conjunction with the Columbia Journalism School.
Whether it’s a 10-part documentary series or a 5-minute video, the best video journalism materializes through story. The trick is identifying the elements that make good storytelling and using your camera to weave those elements together. In this course, students learn the foundations of video storytelling through doing: pitching, shooting, and editing their own videos using their mobile phones and Adobe Premier Pro, one of the most popular professional editing suites in the industry. Participants receive a primer in journalistic techniques and ideals when making video: how to ask questions, how to set up interviews, how to make subjects comfortable — all strategies to being a professional video journalist.
Note: This course asks that students have access to a laptop and at least an iPhone 6 or phone with similar video capabilities. Students are also required to purchase accessories for shooting video with a mobile phone, including a lavalier mic, lavalier extension, and shotgun mic. Students are welcome to find these items through any retailer.
Joe Fanelli is a video producer based in New York. He currently works at Group SJR, creating branded and native content for brands like ExxonMobil, Fidelity, and FTI Consulting. Previously he worked with Al Jazeera English on a two-part series about hyper-polarization in the U.S., and on the documentary series Ground Game: Texas, which followed the 2018 U.S. Senate race in Texas between Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke. Joe holds an M.S. from the Columbia School of Journalism.
