JoAn Monaco is a plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgeon practicing in New York City with more than 15 years of clinical experience. Dedicated to education, she has served as the program director for the aesthetic surgery fellowship at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital for several years and interviews medical school applicants for her medical school. She has mentored students at every stage of their academic journey, from high school through medical school and residency. Her goal for teaching at Columbia is to inspire students interested in becoming physicians by providing an inside look at the worlds of surgery and medicine. She brings a real-world perspective on what it means to pursue a healthcare career: its challenges, its rewards, and its ability to profoundly impact patients' lives.
She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Lehigh University and attended medical school at the University of Vermont. She spent several years doing bench research at the National Institutes of Health.
