ALP Intensive Academic English Program New
The Intensive Academic English Program combines English language instruction with academic content. Each week, students explore a different theme from popular pre-college classes such as business, innovation, science and psychology. By actively engaging with these topics, participants practice academic skills in speaking, writing, listening, reading, vocabulary, and grammar. Targeted, needs-based language input throughout helps participants build and improve their English proficiency, and individualized feedback from the ALP’s expert instructors raises awareness of language use and patterns of error, fostering learner independence. During the course, students research, draft, and complete a final essay on a chosen topic. Additionally, through extensive groupwork, they collaborate to produce final presentations on an area of interest. The course culminates in showcasing these presentations to an audience of peers and instructors.
Prerequisite: The Intensive Academic English Program is designed for multilingual high school students who already possess a strong foundation in English, but who would like to improve their skills and build confidence using the language in a U.S. academic context. While an official test score is not required, participants’ proficiency should be equivalent to around 90 iBT (4.5 new TOEFL scale) or 6.5 IELTS. The course involves a high level of participation and is academically rigorous.
