Christopher Hwu

Instructor | Pre-College Programs

Christopher Hwu is currently a PhD candidate in Chemistry at Columbia University. Utilizing a functional fluorescence uptake assay, he characterizes novel fluorescent false neurotransmitters designed as optical tracers for neurotransmission through the serotonin transporter and vesicular monoamine transporter 2. Additionally, he developed a functional fluorescent inhibition assay used in drug discovery for novel monoamine transporter inhibitors, which have potential as new therapies for depression.

He has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate-level courses in general, organic, physical, and inorganic chemistry. Starting in July 2025, upon completing his PhD, he will join Columbia University as a Columbia Science Fellow and Lecturer in Discipline in Chemistry.

Previously, he earned a Master of Arts in Biotechnology from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University, where he majored in mathematics, chemistry, and biological sciences, with minors in history and anthropology.
