Detailed Breakdown of Costs

University fees are not yet finalized for Summer 2023. The below-listed fees are from the previous term. Tuition and fees are subject to approval by the Board of Trustees and may change.

Activities Fee$50.00 per session

Covers gym and student center access, computer lab use, midday extracurricular activities, and Columbia ID card.

Health Service Fee$40.00 per session

Grants access to Urgent Care at the University's Health Service facility during hours of operation. Fees for medicine and tests, if needed, are not included. The health service fee is not health insurance; all students are expected to have insurance coverage.

Technology Fee$35.00 per term


Application fee, course fees, and course materials are not included in the program cost (see below).

Application Fee

Students are required to pay a nonrefundable $80.00 application fee.

Course Materials

For most curricular options, students should budget approximately $50 for expenses such as text books and field trip-related costs. Some courses also require laptops or equipment that should be purchased before the start of class; these requirements are listed toward the bottom of the pertinent course pages.


    To secure a place in the program, a $1,000.00 non-refundable deposit is due upon notification of acceptance to the program. Students participating in multiple sessions pay an additional deposit for each session they plan to attend. The deposit will be credited toward the program cost and reflect in the final program bill - it is not an additional fee.

    Bill Payment

    A bill for the balance due will be issued to the student's Columbia University email address prior to the start of the program. Before receiving a bill, the student will be sent instructions regarding the option to allow a parent or family member to make a payment through the university's Authorized Payer portal. Program costs are expected to be paid in full for the student to be eligible to participate.

    Deferral Policy & Deadlines for Commuter Students

    Students should plan to enroll in the term for which they apply. However, admitted students who have deposited may submit a request to defer enrollment for a maximum of one semester with the permission of the Admissions Committee. Generally, requests are granted only for very compelling reasons. Reasons the Admissions Committee may consider include medical or family emergencies, or extraordinary opportunities.

    Students may only defer admission to the following term. For example, a student who is admitted and deposited for a summer program may only defer one semester and enroll in the fall term. This same student must reapply if they are interested in a spring program.

    Deferral Deadline for Commuter Students

    After the deadline has passed, students and parents/legal guardians are responsible for payment for the current semester.

    Notice about COVID-19 and Refunds

    We understand the heightened concerns families have surrounding COVID-19. The University is committed to reducing the spread of COVID-19 and has taken extensive measures to ensure the health and safety of the Columbia community. Students who test positive during their residential program will be required to quarantine, and during that period will participate in the program virtually. Commuter students who test positive will also have the ability to participate virtually during their quarantine period. All refund requests will be reviewed and subject to the existing refund policy.

    Financial Aid

    For summer 2023, a limited number of need-based scholarships are available to residents of New York City who participate as commuters in the Summer Immersion (3-Week) Program.

    Individual applications for financial aid are not accepted for students participating in the 1-Week program. Students should speak with their school's guidance counselor for information on how to search for financial aid and scholarship opportunities from outside sources and organizations.
